“Our Elders are Our Responsibility” social activity held in Sweida province marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day
Sweida – The Mahaba and Wafa (Amity and Loyalty) Association in the Syrian province of Sweida held a social activity titled “Our Elders are Our Responsibility” marking World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The activity was held under the supervision of the Directorate of Social Affairs and labor in the province.
The activity included distributing some needs of the elders who are registered in the association, conducting free medical checkups and delivering lectures on the importance of respecting this category of people and the proper way to deal with them and on some health issues, mainly the protection from Osteoporosis.
The event also included artistic activities, mainly songs from Sweida local heritage, attended by a number of registered elderly people.
In a statement to SANA, Feryal Al-Salim stressed the importance of focusing on adherence to respecting the elders and benefiting from their experience and on combating elder abuse.
The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD) happens each year on June 15th. It was officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly in its resolution 66/127, December 2011, following a request by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (INPEA), who first established the commemoration in June 2006. It represents the one day in the year when the whole world voices its opposition to the abuse and suffering inflicted to some of the older generations.
