Syria sparing no effort to achieve sustainable development: Assistant Minister of Labor

Geneva – Assistant Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Mohammad Firas Al-Nabhan has stressed the need to exert all efforts necessary to implement the recommendations of the report of the International Labor Organization (ILO) on the situation of workers in the occupied Arab territories, including in the occupied Syrian Golan, with the aim of providing protection to the workers and preserving their rights.

In Syria’s speech at the 111th Conference of the ILO in Geneva on Friday, Al-Nabhan said that the Israeli occupation entity is practicing systematic terrorism in the occupied Syrian Golan, through repressive and racist practices and discriminatory measures against Syrian workers there. He pointed out that the occupation continues to deprive the workers of benefiting from their agricultural property and water resources and undermine all opportunities to establish any economic activity there.

He affirmed that despite the unjust economic blockade imposed on them, the Syrian people continue with their fight to restore security and stability to the country, to address the negative impacts of the terrorist war they have been exposed to, to restore the economic and social infrastructure, the human resources and the labor market, to face the repercussions of the devastating earthquake that struck the country and to work hard to achieve the goals of sustainable development through strengthening cooperation and joint action with all concerned parties in these domains with the aim of achieving development and well-being for all peoples.

Al-Nabhan went on to say “we seek strengthening the foundation of economic and social stability and achieving the safe and dignified return of the displaced Syrian citizens who have been forced to flee from their areas due to terrorism”.

He pointed out that Syria has drawn up plans and prepared programs at all levels to be a solid base for restoring the development process with the active and productive participation of all the Syrians, and within an encouraging work environment that provides decent job opportunities for all the Syrians and enhances their participation in the development and reconstruction of their country.

He clarified that the labor market in Syria has been affected by the terrorist war on Syria and by the unilateral coercive economic measures imposed on the country in flagrant violation of all international and human rights conventions, and in a bid to disrupt the Syrian national efforts to achieve recovery and reconstruction.
