On May 29th, the Minister of Transport Zuhair Khuzaym discussed with the Chinese Ambassador in Damascus Shi Hongwei ways to promote transport relations and upgrade them to the level of political and strategic relations that bind the two countries.
The two sides also discussed the importance of Syria’s participation in the “Belt and Road Initiative”, as it was historically an important station and corridor for the ancient Silk Road, with its vital strategic location that enables it to play an effective role as a connection point for land, rail, sea and air transport lines in a way that reactivates transport movement, increases trade exchange and encourages carrying out joint investment projects.
The meeting dealt with the importance of investment opportunities in Syria, building bridges of cooperation in the fields of railways and the two road projects (West-East) and (North-South) referred to in the Syrian-Chinese partnership agreement with the Belt and Road project.
The Minister of Transport praised the Chinese people’s support for the Syrian people and the humanitarian, relief and medical assistance tget provided to those affected by the earthquake that struck Syria.
In turn, the Chinese ambassador pointed to the importance of expanding cooperation, investing in Syria’s vital location and intensifying efforts to develop relations and encourage joint investments, especially in the fields of transportation.
