Arab foreign ministers announce the resumption of Syria’s participation in the Arab League meetings

After their meeting in Cairo, the foreign ministers of the League of Arab States issued Resolution No. 8914, in which they approved the resumption of the participation of delegations of the Syrian Arab Republic in the meetings of the League Council and all its affiliated organizations and agencies, starting today. 

The Council of the League of Arab States at the ministerial level, headed by the Arab Republic of Egypt, in its extraordinary session, which was held on Sunday, May 7, 2023, decided the following:

– Renewing commitment to preserving Syria’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, stability and territorial integrity, based on the Arab League Charter and its principles, and emphasizing the importance of continuing and intensifying Arab efforts aimed at helping Syria get out of its crisis based on the desire to end the suffering of the brotherly Syrian people that has extended over the years. 

Welcoming the Arab statements issued by the Jeddah meeting on Syria on April 14, 2023, and the Amman meeting on Syria on May 1, 2023, and keenness to launch an Arab leadership role in efforts to resolve the Syrian crisis that addresses all the consequences of the humanitarian, security and political crisis on Syria and its people, and addresses the repercussions of this crisis on neighboring countries, the region and the world, especially the burden of asylum, the threat of terrorism and the danger of drug smuggling

Emphasizing the need to take practical and effective steps to gradually resolve the crisis according to the principle of step-for-step and in line with Security Council Resolution No. 2254, starting with continuing steps that allow the delivery of humanitarian aid to all those in need in Syria, including in accordance with the mechanisms adopted in the relevant Security Council resolutions

Forming a ministerial liaison committee consisting of Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Lebanon, Egypt and the Secretary-General to follow up on the implementation of the Amman Declaration and to continue direct dialogue with the Syrian government to reach a comprehensive solution to the Syrian crisis that addresses all its consequences according to the step-for-step methodology and in line with Security Council Resolution No. 2254. 

Resume the participation of delegations of the government of the Syrian Arab Republic in the meetings of the Council of the League of Arab States and all its affiliated organizations and agencies, as of May 7, 2023. 

Request from the Secretary-General to follow up on the implementation of what is stated in this resolution and to inform the Council of developments.
