Havana – Syria, through its Ambassador to Cuba Ghassan Obeid, took part in the meeting of the Culture Ministers of the G77 plus China, which was held in the Cuban Capital Havana under the title (Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development” in the presence of Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel.
In a statement, Obeid affirmed the need to enhance cooperation between countries of the south in order to confront the serious challenges and preserve the culture of each country so that it can be transferred to future generations.
He talked about the dangerous attacks that targeted the Syrian cultural heritage during the years of the unjust terrorist war against Syria, including the deliberate destruction and sabotage, the illegal excavations and theft and the unjust unilateral siege that aimed at undermining Syria. He stressed that Syria will not be broken or defeated as it is home to the oldest civilizations of the world.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Obeid met with several participating culture ministers during which the need to support culture in various ways and enhance its effective and important role in the sustainable development process of Member States was stressed. The importance of exchanging experiences and knowledge and conducting cultural dialogues between countries was also stressed during Obeid’s meetings with the culture ministers.
The participating ministers asserted their rejection of the policy of imposing blockade and sanctions on sovereign countries, because of its serious repercussions and negative impacts on culture and on culture’s important role in developing and strengthening the values of peace, justice and love among the peoples of the countries of the world.
