To meet industrial, services, entertainment and exploratory requirements, a group of students of the Applied College, Department of Mechatronics, Damascus University, designed a six legged spider robot with a robotic arm with three degrees of freedom.
The students, Aghid Al Abbas, Khalifa Al-Mousa, Hassan Dallah, and Alaa Al-Sayed Ahmed explained to SANA that they replaced the wheeled robot with spider hexagonal legs robot, equipped with a robotic arm and a camera with a flash, which enables the robot to see the road and go in the right direction.
Regarding the control of the robot, students said that the control is done through a mobile application connected to the internet (Wi fi), to secure a wireless connection between the mobile and the robot to carry out many tasks. The most important task is to explore tunnels, rubbles, in addition to the possibility of using the robot to dismantle explosive devices by replacing the arm with a cutter. This robot can be also used when earthquakes occur to locate the presence of people alive.
For his part, Dr Muhammed Al Hussein, Director of the Computer Technical Institute in Damascus University, and the project supervisor, explained that the robot can be used for space exploration instead of humans, and in the hospitals to prevent transmission of viruses.
Dr. Hussein added that this project is considered as one of the distinguished projects, pointing out that it was completely designed by the students. It was presented at the annual projects exhibition at the University of Damascus, and it won the distinguished project award.
