Johannesburg (ST): The BRICS group announced that 19 countries have requested to join it, “as it prepares to hold its annual summit in South Africa in early June.
Anil Soklal, South African ambassador to BRICS, said in statement, as reported by Sputnik, that “BRICS” will meet in Cape Town on the 2nd and 3rd of June to discuss its expansion, stressing that “13 countries formally requested accession and six other countries requested informally. He stressed that the next meeting will discuss the expansion of BRICS and how this will happen, as the group receives daily join requests.
It is noteworthy that the BRICS group, consisting of China, Russia, Brazil and India, has not accepted new members since its formation in 2006, except for one member, South Africa, in 2010.
