On April 20th, the Cuban Parliament re-elected Miguel Diaz-Canel as President of Cuba for a second constitutional term.
The Speaker of the National Assembly, Esteban Laso Hernandez, announced in a statement that the Parliament re-elected Canel for a new term of five years, after obtaining 459 votes out of 604 votes, representing 97.66 percent of the votes cast by members of Parliament.
Hernandez noted that the Parliament has also chosen Salvador Valdés Mesa as First Vice President.
Diaz Canel was appointed a member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the party in 2003 and Minister of Higher Education from 2009 to 2012. After that, he was elected First Vice President until 2018, when he was elected by the Cuban Parliament as President of Cuba after obtaining 603 votes out of 604.
Inas Abdulkareem
