Syria wins silver and bronze medals at International STEM Olympiad

With the participation of more than 11,000 students from 114 countries around the world, the team of the Applied Physics and Basic Sciences Center in Lattakia , which represented Syria, has won two silver and bronze medals, and two certificates of appreciation in the International Olympiad for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM), which was organized by the European Union countries.

The competition, launched by Main Team Organization GmbH, targeted high school students and served as an international online competition platform for those interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The scientific supervisor at the center and the team coach Basel Sultan told SANA that what distinguishes this Olympiad from other international competitions is the innovative way to raise issues whose topics are inspired by lived reality and the use of interactive simulations, with the aim of motivating the computational and creative thinking of the participants.

The Syrian participating students said that this experience is completely different from their previous participation in terms of non-traditional questions, stressing that this competition is an opportunity to discover, explore and acquire new knowledge that would develop their mental perceptions.

They expressed their pride in representing Syria in international competitions and enhancing its strong presence and ability to succeed despite the conditions of war, siege and sanctions.

It is noteworthy that the Center for Applied Physics and Basic Sciences was established in 2020 in Lattakia with the support of the Ministry of Education with the aim of supporting talented students and develop their skills in physics, mathematics and chemistry subjects, and train them on the basics of scientific research and innovation, to form competitive scientific teams capable of representing Syria, and raising its name in local and international scientific events and competitions.
