A medical team at Al-Assad University Hospital succeeds in reconstructing half-facial atrophy using computer-assisted surgery

Damascus (ST): A medical team at Al-Assad University Hospital in Damascus succeeded in reconstructing an entire half-facial atrophy using computer-assisted surgery in a 19-year-old patient.

Dr. Khalil Youssef, a researcher in the field of reconstructing facial and maxillofacial injuries using computer-assisted surgery, explained in a statement to SANA news  reporter  that the case is being accomplished for the first time in Syria and perhaps in the region, as all work stages have been completed, passing through design, manufacturing and the surgery which took five hours.

Dr. Khalil stated that half-facial atrophy is a rare disorder characterized by a gradual deterioration of the skin, soft tissues, and bones at the site of the injury. It appears at birth and is usually treated after the development of atrophy through reconstructive and cosmetic surgeries, indicating that the treatment was done here using computer-assisted maxillofacial surgery.

He added: The team initially used the latest diagnostic methods through 3D radiography, 3D scanning, and 3D intraoral scanning, to reach the so-called virtual patient, which was used in designing implants intended for the real patient by taking advantage of the healthy side to rebuild the injury areas in the frontal, zygomatic and mandibular bone.
