Lavrov, Abdollahian discuss regional and international developments, situation in Syria

Moscow, (ST) – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amir Abdollahian discussed during a meeting in Moscow on Wednesday the latest developments in the world and the Middle East, including the situation in Syria.

They also discussed areas of cooperation between Russia and Iran.

RT quoted Lavrov as saying: Russia and Iran are working successfully to increase the exchange of businessmen’s delegations.

Lavrov added that such exchanges, along with the activities of the bilateral governmental committee for trade and economic cooperation ensure a continuous and significant increase in trade between the two countries.

Lavrov pointed out that Iran and Russia are cooperating intensively in many fields, including in political dialogue, economic and investment cooperation, and in the implementation of various projects.

In a press conference following their talks, Lavrov said that Moscow and Tehran confirm their rejection of the Western approach in dealing with the countries of the world.

He said that the West is not pushing for a halt of fighting in Ukraine; rather NATO is fighting on Kiev’s side.

“The West is adopting subversive policy in Ukraine, announcing there is no potential for stopping the war there while ruthlessly raging the war no matter the cost,” Lavrov stated in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart.

Concerning the situation in Syria, Lavrov said that he discussed developments in Syria during the meeting with his Iranian counterpart. The two sides highly valued the 19th International Meeting on Syria in the Astana format.

On the other hand, they hailed the improvement of the situation in the Middle East region in the light of the declared restoration of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.
