Ambassador Ali Ahmad: Syria’s right to regain the occupied Golan is inalienable

Geneva (ST): Syria affirmed its inalienable right to recover the occupied Syrian Golan, calling on all countries not to recognize any steps taken by Israel to perpetuate its occupation of this land, and to refrain from providing any assistance that would enable it to continue its violations of international law.

The Permanent Representative of Syria to the United Nations Office in Geneva Haider Ali Ahmad said in a statement  during a session of the Human Rights Council on the situation in the Middle East: “We are still witnessing, in full view of the world, the war crime being committed by the Israeli occupation through its continuous illegal settlement activities in the occupied Syrian Golan, particularly after the escalatory plans announced by the Israeli occupation authorities at the end of 2021 to double the number of settlers in the Golan within five years.

Ali Ahmad pointed to the escalation of the occupation plan to establish wind turbines on the occupied Golan, which confirms the intransigence of this usurping entity in moving forward unabated with its racist settlement and colonial practices, which constitute flagrant violations of all human rights of the Syrians in the occupied Golan.

He added: “The time has come to start taking concrete measures to end the inability of the international community to carry out its duties regarding putting an end to the repeated Israeli aggressions against Syria and the Palestinian people, and to end the Israeli occupation of Arab lands, which, as everyone knows, is the result of the support provided by the United States and the governments of other countries for the Israeli occupation entity.

Ali Ahmad considered that providing this support despite the horrific crimes being committed by the occupation is the biggest evidence of the contempt of the United States and (Israel) for the provisions of international law, the Charter of the United Nations and international resolutions related to the situation in the occupied Syrian Golan, including Security Council Resolutions 237, 242 and 497. He indicated that this unprecedented situation of unlimited impunity has encouraged (Israel), the occupying power, to persist in carrying out criminal and terrorist attacks against Syria, which have claimed civilian lives and affected residential neighborhoods, educational facilities and civilian infrastructure, including the airports of Damascus and Aleppo, which are used by the United Nations for humanitarian aid operations.

Ali Ahmad  stressed that no description can express the hatred that prompted Israel to launch an attack on a residential neighborhood in the capital, Damascus, at a time when Syria was healing its wounds from the devastating earthquake last February, and at a time when the blood of the martyrs of a massacre committed by the (ISIS) organization in Palmyra  had not dried yet, pointing out that the repeated synchronization between the attacks of the occupation and the attacks of (ISIS) proves beyond any doubt the organic link between this terror organization and the Israeli occupation entity.

The Syrian diplomat concluded his statement by saying: “We thank the countries that have shown their keenness on international law and we condemn the attempts of the United States to undermine this law by adopting blatant double standards and  encouraging the occupying entity to act as a force above the law”. He called for holding the occupation accountable for all the crimes it has committed  in flagrant violation of the most basic principles of human rights, against the people in the occupied Golan and against the Palestinian people.
