Workshop on impact of fake news on modern media kicks off at Damascus University

Damascus, (ST) – The Faculty of Journalism at the University of Damascus, in cooperation with the Russian Sputnik News Agency and Radio, yesterday held a workshop entitled “The Phenomenon of Fake News and its Impact on Modern Media”, at the Reda Saeed Hall at the University of Damascus.

The workshop, which was broadcast via video technology discussed the role of the media in confronting the falsification of facts and the media war that Syria and Russia are facing currently and in confronting the Western media’s attempts to mislead of world public opinion.

Director of International Cooperation at the Media Group (RT) Vasily Pushkov said in an intervention that the phenomenon of spreading fake news through the media is not new, and it stems from the special interests of many parties. He indicated that fake news spreads greatly during wars and crises, and thus increases the responsibility of journalists to search for facts and publish them.

During her intervention, the Deputy Director of the General Directorate of Information in the Media Group (RT), Victoria Polikaryovka reviewed the importance of possessing and documenting accurate information and the necessity of adopting multiple sources and staying away from suspicious sources of information.

Dean of the Faculty of Journalism, Dr. Bariaa Choucair said in a statement to SANA that the workshop is an attempt to connect university students with the labor market, and provide them with practical and applied experiences, in addition to providing them with new information in their field of specialization.
