Iraq’s current problems are caused by the US invasion, says Russian diplomat

Moscow, (ST) – Russia’s ambassador to Baghdad, Elbrus Kotrashev confirmed that Iraq’s current problems are largely due to the American invasion of the United States in 2003.

TASS quoted Kotrashev as saying at the Valdai International Club during a discussion on the topic, “Iraq after twenty years, the results of the American intervention”  that the United States, Britain and the countries affiliated with them at the time undertook a major uncalculated and unjustified military adventure without a UN Security Council resolution in flagrant violation of international law, and it invaded Iraq. He pointed out that this aggressive act by the US was very ugly and unexpected, as they invaded a sovereign country, which is a member of the United Nations, and occupied its lands.

Kotrashev pointed out that Iraq is currently in a really difficult situation, and the problems it suffers from are due to the invasion that took place at that time. He said that the occupiers tried stupidly and foolishly to rearrange life there and prepare for departure, but it was the departure of survival at the same time.

The Russian ambassador believed that the American-British military adventure in Iraq opened the doors to the threat of international terrorism in the region. He pointed out that there was a period when Iraq was a hotbed of international terrorism, as dozens of suicide terrorist attacks occurred in one day by the terrorist Al-Qaeda organization. He added that the invasion also creating tension and escalation that forced people to leave their places of residence and move to new places.
