President Al-Assad: The West’s behavior contradicts its claims about democracy and humanitarian principles

President Bashar Al-Assad has stressed that the war in Syria has proven that the West will not change as it continues to seek turning other countries into subordinate states that serve its interests even at the expense of the people of these countries.

The same thing is being repeated in Russia which has been the target of the West’s schemes for the past 300 years with the aim of dividing and weakening it, President Al-Assad said in an interview with the Russia I channel, stressing that the West’s behavior contradicts all its claims about democracy and humanitarian values.

They (western countries) are only good at exporting terms, said President Al-Assad, clarifying “freedom, for example, is a positive term, but this term may mean to kill, destroy or do everything bad. Likewise, democracy for the West is to be an agent that serves its interest and goals”.

Regarding his relation with President Vladimir Putin, President Al-Assad said that he met with President Putin for the first time in 2005, pointing out that the relation is based on confidence, respect and friendship.

“For a friend to be useful to you, he must be strong and not weak, so Russian logic completely contradicts the western logic, and this is where the difference lies in the relationship between Russia and Syria and between the West and Syria,” the President clarified.

President Al-Assad went on to say that the West built its civilization after stealing the financial resources of the America it discovered 600 years ago. It used these resources to build and develop technology to use it in enslaving peoples. And today, after 600 years, the West is doing the same.”

“However, I think that there is a growing awareness in the world that the western policy will lead only to one thing, which is the destruction of humanity and civilization,” he said.

On the war in Ukraine, President Al-Assad said “Russia’s victory in this war will be reflected directly on Syria in two aspects: First, Russia is friend of Syria, and if your friend is in a strong position, you will be strong. Second, this victory will reflect on the international situation. If this situation improves as a result of the Russian victory, it will have positive impacts on us also”.

The President asserted that Syria fully understands the western countries’ policies and malicious ways in dealing with other states with the aim of achieving their own agendas.

Concerning the possibility of the West trying again to instigate the terrorist groups to resume terrorist acts in Syria, President Al-Assad said the terrorists didn’t stop their activities in Syria. “All the terrorists in Syria are led directly by America, it may be through Turkey sometimes, but the mastermind is an American one. Terrorism is one of the West’s armies that back up NATO’s forces and West will not stop doing such acts unless there is a deterrent force or unless it is exposed to a big defeat.”

“The West used terrorism against the Soviet Union in Afghanistan and in Chechnya and now it is using it in Ukraine and Syria and this, I think will continue for long years,” he explained, pointing out that the Syrian army and people are ready to fight terrorism and extremism.

Regarding the contacts between Syria and Turkey, the president said the contacts between the two sides started at the level of security and defense ministers, and now a meeting at the level of deputy foreign ministers is under discussion, which may lead to a meeting at the level of foreign ministers. “This depends on the details and results of the dialogue,” he made it clear, pointing out that any meeting with the Turkish side must take the interests of the Syrian people into account.

“In this case, it is necessary to separate personal feelings from the national interest. The national interest is the most important. If there is any meeting with any party, be it Turkey or any other party, achieves the Syrian interest, ends the war and stops the bloodshed, then it is natural that we move in this direction towards this goal,” President Al-Assad said.

On the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons’ accusation that Syria has used chemical weapons, President Al-Assad said that this issue is similar to the narrative which claimed that Iraq was possessing chemical weapons and later Colin Powell apologized, saying it was a lie and Tony Blair also shouldered the responsibility for the wrong decision to invade Iraq. However no one held Colin Powell or Tony Blair accountable.

“Maybe one day, a US official comes out to apologize and say that there were no Syrian chemical weapons,” President Al-Assad added, clarifying that “this is an example of the Western policy. They control most peoples of the world through the media, and therefore it is easy for them to say anything and invent any story”.
