An art exhibition in Lattakia documents earthquake victims

With the participation of twenty one plastic artists from different governorates, an art exhibition entitled “Under the wreckage ” was recently held at the Cultural Center in Lattakia governorate to express the artists’ feelings concerning the painful reality of the repercussions of the earthquake.

The seven-day cultural event displayed dozens of paintings that embodied and documented the earthquake disaster.

Head of the Central Office of Exhibitions and Galleries at the Union of Artists, artist Hussein Sokoor said in a statement to Syriatimes e-newspaper “The exhibition included expressive artworks and sculptures that depicted nature before the earthquake in addition to human cases”.

The plastic artist Ibtisam Khaddam participated in two sculptural works. The first work is a female that embodied a state of emergence as she is looking towards the sky, the sun, and the light, but at the same time she is rooted in the earth.

The artist pointed out that the female represents Syria, which is rooted in history and civilization, and is able to rise despite all the difficulties and tribulations.

She added ”The second sculpture work is a bird that symbolizes peace. We make peace, and we dedicate it to the world. It is a call for inner peace, and against despair and frustration”.

In turn, the artist Adnan Al-Muhammad from Homs province said “the idea of the exhibition is a noble one and the works are distinguished. Through my painting I wanted to express that despite the wreckage there will be a Syrian renaissance” stressing that the artist’s message is to reflect human pain and feelings, and the artist has a positive role in raising motivation and contributing to dealing with the effects of the disaster.

Sonia Jadid expressed her admiration for the exhibition, stressing that art is a human partner in expressing his sorrows or joys, as it embodies events and documents them, and it is also an expressive tool that summarizes what happened in a musical note, artistic painting, or sculpture.
