The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates meets the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees

Today, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, met with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, Filippo Grandi, and the accompanying delegation.

The two sides discussed cooperation between the Syrian government and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), in particular in facing the repercussions resulting from the earthquake that struck Syria last February.

During the meeting today, Minister Al-Miqdad stressed the importance of the existing cooperation with the Commission and the United Nations organizations and offices operating in Syria, to contribute to overcoming the effects of the earthquake.

Minister Al-Miqdadreferred to the impact of the unilateral coercive sanctions imposed by the West and the United States of America on Syria.

He said that the impact of these sanctions falls primarily on ordinary Syrian people, and this is what Syria faced during the earthquake disaster.

In turn, Grandi expressed his appreciation for the cooperation shown by the Syrian government with the Commission, and pointed out the importance of coordinating work between the Commission and the various relevant government agencies.

Grandi stressed the necessity of linking the relief efforts undertaken by the High Commissioner after the earthquake, and those undertaken with regard to the return of refugees.
