Politicizing Syria’s chemical file is a failed strategy, says Iravani

New York, (ST) – Iran’s Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, confirmed that the politicization of the Syrian chemical file by some countries is a failed strategy. He added that this matter has endangered the process of resolving the remaining issues.

In his speech during the UN Security Council meeting last night to discuss “Syria’s chemical file,” Iravani said that the application of double standards only distracts attention from the technical nature of the discussions at hand. He added that Iran is concerned about the exploitation and politicization of the Chemical Weapons Convention, which has caused disagreements between countries members and weaken the credibility and legitimacy of the organization.

Iravani stressed that Iran supports conducting a constructive dialogue between Syria and the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons at the highest level with a specific time frame, to solve the remaining issues and close the file once and for all.

Iravani said that every investigation must be impartial, professional, credible and objective, and fully compatible with the requirements and procedures of the agreement.

The Iranian delegate pointed out that holding monthly meetings on the Syrian chemical file despite the absence of “new developments” is a repetition by some members of the Security Council of their previous allegations against Syria, and would only lead to a waste of United Nations’ resources and the time of the Security Council.
