An initiative to secure shelter for those affected by earthquake in Lattakia

With the aim of securing shelter for the families affected by the earthquake in Lattakia Governorate, the “Kibarna” association launched an initiative based on renting houses while securing the requirements of these houses.

President of the association, Samiha Ajeel, noted in a statement to SANA reporter that the initiative is a shelter insurance program for those affected. It began in the fourth week of the earthquake, after studying the condition of the house and examining the damage.  According to each case, houses will be rented for those affected for a period of one year or 6 months in addition to providing them with food hampers,  home furnishings and cash support.

Dahuk Mufti, the association’s secretary, shed light on the difficulties facing the shelter program, which are represented by the lack of offered homes and the high wages, noting the association’s keenness to ensure that the house is safe and habitable.

Regarding the association’s other activities, the medical and psychological director of the Association, Dr. Rabab Shreiteh, referred to the participation in the rapid response campaign to the earthquake, in cooperation with the Directorates of Health, Social Affairs, and Labor, as well as civil and voluntary associations, with the support of the World Health Organization, with a medical team and a mobile psychological support team that provides medical services.

Dr. Tayseer Walid, an internal specialist(volunteer doctor in the association) noted that he participated in the medical survey team, to monitor the monthly need for medicines, secure them, and distribute them to patients. He also contributed to check those affected, accompanied by an ambulatory psychological support team, and conducted detection and monitoring of contagious diseases.

Laith Sidawi, a volunteer in the association and coordinator of the rapid response team, pointed out the association’s efforts to meet the basic needs of those affected by the earthquake, in conjunction with its primary role in caring for the elderly, and providing aid and psychological and social support services.

It is noteworthy that the “Kibarna” Association was established in 2011 and is concerned with caring for the elderly who have no breadwinners and families with scarce economic resources.
