Ahmed Al-Shihabi, stated that the area of Old Aleppo is 400 hectares, including 16,000 real estate, where the remains of Aleppo Citadel, including its defensive towers, the Ottoman mill, and some parts of the upper wall, were demolished, in addition to a number of minarets of ancient mosques. .
Al-Shihabi pointed out that Bab al-Nasr and Bab al-Hadid suffered a collapse in the stone arch, while Bab Antakya and its tower were exposed to some stones falling, just as the north and south towers of Bab Antakya and the Ayyubid tower had their stone facades collapsed.
Al-Shihabi said: “The Ahmadiyya market is one of the most damaged markets. The Ahmadiyya or Al-Shalabi cafe has a third of its roof area destroyed. As for the markets that were not restored, they were subjected to the greatest destruction, such as the remaining part of the Al-Attarin market, the Aslan Dada market, and the Soap Khan and Al-Albiya, all of which have collapsed. Antakya is Khan Al-Tatn due to great destruction, and the facade of Khan Al-Wazir is liable to fall at any moment, and a large number of neighborhoods are considered disjointed.”
Regarding the measures taken by the old city and the governorate, Al-Shihabi indicated that the city council intervened to protect citizens from harm while crossing the lanes or gates. Formation of seven committees according to the real estate regions that evaluate each property.
Regarding the repair and restoration of damaged houses in Old Aleppo, Al-Shihabi affirmed that the urban system for Old Aleppo was amended in 2021, and the control system is the one that determines the standards for restoration, the basic materials that must be used in real estate, and determines the heights.
Al-Shihabi indicated that the ancient stones of Aleppo are archaeological, so we do not interfere with the axes through the mechanisms to open them so as not to cause damage to the stones.
