UNRWA delegation inspects the damage caused by the earthquake in Al-Raml Al-Janoubi neighborhood in Lattakia
Latakia, (ST) – A delegation from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) was briefed on the damage caused by the earthquake in Al-Raml Al-Janoubi neighborhood and Al-Aedin camp in Lattakia. They met with a number of affected families in shelters.
The Head of UNRWA Employees Affairs Authority in Amman “Ben Majiko Donme” said in a statement to reporters that his visit to Syria, on behalf of the Commissioner-General of UNRWA, aims at inspecting the conditions of the Palestinian refugees in the aftermath of the earthquake that affected the city of Lattakia. He was briefed on the difficult conditions that the citizens in Lattakia are going through.
Majiko Donme indicated that the meeting with the Governor of Lattakia Amer Hilal was fruitful, and it focused on supporting refugees who lost their families and whose homes were damaged, and those in shelters. It also focused and the work of the committees for inspecting the structural safety of residential buildings.
The Director of UNRWA Affairs in Syria “Amania Michael Eby” praised the efforts of the Syrian government and the Latakia Governorate to confront the repercussions of this disaster, as the governorate quickly sent rescue teams to search for survivors and help the afflicted families in the camp.
He referred to the cooperation and coordination between the UNRWA office and the Syrian government, the Lattakia Governorate and the Syrian Trust for Development to meet the needs of the families residing in shelters.
He said: “We look forward to enhancing cooperation with Lattakia Governorate to provide financial assistance to Palestinian refugees affected by the earthquake and providing necessary psychosocial support and rehabilitating damaged UNRWA facilities.”
He added that 13 UNRWA facilities in Syria were damaged as a result of the earthquake and more than 500 refugee homes, while the damage assessment committees are still continuing their work until final statistics are reached.
