Minister of Agriculture to FAO Director: We look forward to increasing Syria’s share of the organization’s funding to rehabilitate the damaged resources

On February 15th, the Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Eng. Mohamed Hassan Qatana, and the Director General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations “FAO” Qu Dongyu discussed means of cooperation in the next stage.

On the sidelines of the meetings of the 46th session of the Board of Governors of the International Fund for Agricultural Development “IFAD”, which was held in Rome, Dongyu offered condolences to the Syrian people ove the victims of the devastating earthquake.

Dongyu said that the organization will do everything in its power to support the Syrian people to face the effects of the earthquake, and to rehabilitate the educational and infrastructure.

Qatna pointed to the importance of lifting the siege and unilateral measures imposed on Syria.

Qatna said: “We look forward to increasing Syria’s share of the funding allocated to it by the organization and doubling the budget so that it can rehabilitate damaged resources, rural development programs, return to achieving food security and rely on a new and joint strategy to frame the projects to be implemented in Syria, and the transition from livelihood projects to response and development projects”.

Qatna reviewed five projects proposed for implementation in Syria, including a project for sustainable management of agriculture in the Badia(desert) more efficient and comprehensive agricultural and food systems in light of climate changes, spreading and adopting a one-health approach to enhance food security, rehabilitating the Palmyra oasis, and sustainable management of forests and forests.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Rami Al-Ali, and the Chargé d’Affaires of the FAO, Ayman Raad.
