Lebanese Minister discusses with a European Union delegation the mechanism for receiving aid for earthquake victims in Syria

Beirut, (ST) -The Lebanese Caretaker Minister of Public Works and Transport Dr. Ali Hamieh on Wednesday discussed with a delegation from the European Union (EU) a mechanism for receiving European humanitarian aid to earthquake victims in Syria, through Lebanese facilities.

The delegation affirmed during the meeting that the European Union will provide aid to Syria as it had provided it to Lebanon following the Beirut port explosion in August 2020.

The EU delegation reviewed the options it deems appropriate to facilitate the process of transferring aid to Syria, whether through the Lebanese airport or ports. ThE delegation pointed out that this is the first time that the European Union transfers aid through the territory of a third country to reach the target country.

For his part, Hamieh said: “Lebanon means Syria in the face of the repercussions of this earthquake.”

He added that The decision to open air and sea facilities to receive humanitarian aid from countries, institutions and international organizations, and to exempt them from airport and port fees is part of our national and moral duty to help Syria face the repercussions of the earthquake, despite the difficult economic conditions we are going through at all levels”, Hamieh added.

Hamieh pointed out that his ministry has put in place all facilitations to speed up the delivery of aid and made necessary contacts with all concerned parties present at the border facilities and crossings to guarantee easy and speedy entry and delivery of this aid to those who deserve it.
