UN experts call for total lifting of coercive measures imposed on Syria

Geneva (ST): UN experts have called for completely lifting the unilateral coercive measures imposed on Syria and for allowing humanitarian and financial aid to flow into the country without obstacles so that it can face the repercussions of the devastating earthquake that hit the country last Monday.
The experts, affiliated with the Human Rights Council, said in a statement they issued in Geneva: “It is imperative for the international community, especially the countries imposing unilateral sanctions on Syria to take immediate measures to put an end to them as the country is deprived of vital infrastructure and in dire need for recovery and reconstruction after the decade-long war.”
The experts stressed that for the humanitarian response to be effective, there is a need for an enabling environment, for international cooperation and unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, including food, medicine, medical equipment and construction materials. There is a need also for financial flows to support this assistance because all these aspects are constrained by regulations included in the existing sanctions against Syria.
