Minister Al-Miqdad discusses with Clements cooperation in facing the repercussions of the earthquake in Syria

On February 12thDr. Faisal Al-Miqdad, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, met with Kelly Talmas Clements, Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees of the United Nations, and the accompanying delegation

The two sides discussed cooperation between the UNHCR and the various national agencies in Syria, especially cooperation in facing the repercussions of the earthquake that struck the region a few days ago. 

Minister Al-Miqdad presented the effects of the earthquake on the affected governorates in terms of the victims, the injured and the destroyed infrastructure

He renewed Syria’s call for concerted global efforts, whether by the United Nations agencies or its member states, to support the governmental measures taken to confront the repercussions of the earthquake, and to provide assistance to the Syrian people and the national governmental and private bodies that respond to these repercussions. 

He stressed Syria’s keenness to care for and support the affected Syrians, and to deliver humanitarian aid to them throughout the Syrian territory. 

In her turn, Clements offered her condolences to the Syrian government and people and to the families of the earthquake victims, stressing the UNHCR’s relentless endeavor to make all possible efforts, and to develop all available capabilities to respond to the effects of this natural disaster. 

Clements presented the efforts made by the Commission and the plans and projects it seeks to implement in this framework, in parallel with other projects and plans that come within the Commission’s efforts to provide humanitarian aid to the Syrian people

Meanwhile, Minister Miqdad, received a phone call from Ayman Safadi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriate Affairs of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan.

During the phone call, Safadi renewed his country’s support for Syria in its calamity and continued coordination in sending aid and humanitarian assistance to those affected by the earthquake disaster.

In turn, Minister Mikdad expressed his thanks and appreciation to Jordan’s leadership and people for standing by Syria in its ordeal, noting the deep historical relations between the two countries

He stressed Syria’s aspiration to continue cooperation with the brothers in Jordan in a way that serves the interest of the two brotherly peoples.
