Syria delivers the statement of the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean region in Geneva

Geneva (ST): The  Executive Council of the World Health Organization continued the deliberations of its 152nd session, held in Geneva, which will continue until the 7th of next month.

The Syrian Arab Republic delivered a statement on behalf of the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region entitled Enhancing WHO Preparedness and Emergency Response and Strengthening the Global Structure for Preparedness and Resilience. The Minister of Health, Dr. Hassan Muhammad Al-Ghobash, underlined the importance of the organization’s pivotal role in the global structure of preparedness and response to health emergencies, and its responsibility in setting international rules and standards, exchanging data and information, preparing policies and directives, and investigating and responding to health emergencies.

The Minister of Health indicated that the countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region are looking forward to further clarification of several details, and to technical support for the implementation of some proposals, and they express their contentment over further discussions on the Global Council for Health Emergencies, preparedness and response, and additional consultations on building the health workforce.

On behalf of the Eastern Mediterranean Region, Minister Gobash  proposed an increased focus to strengthen the capabilities developed during the pandemic in the field of emergency preparedness and work to sustain them in several areas, such as monitoring, laboratories, clinical care, and access to medical control methods.

The countries of the Eastern Mediterranean Region expressed their permanent commitment to promoting compliance with and implementation of the International Health Regulations.

It is noteworthy that the World Health Assembly unanimously elected Syria in May 2021, during its seventy-fourth session, for membership in the Executive Council of the World Health Organization, representing the Eastern Mediterranean Region, for a period of three years.
