Syria takes part in Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week 2023 to discuss efforts to achieve climate neutrality
Syria is taking part in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week (ADSW 2023) which was kicked off on Saturday and will last until January 19th in the United Arab Emirates.
Leaders of countries as well as experts and entrepreneurs in different sectors and from different parts of the world will discuss major issues and ideas that would contribute to supporting the global efforts to achieve climate neutrality.
Climate neutrality refers to the idea of achieving net zero greenhouse gas emissions by balancing those emissions so they are equal (or less than) the emissions that get removed through the planet’s natural absorption.
Syria’s Minister of Electricity Ghassan Al-Zamel took part in the opening of the 13th Session of the International Renewable Energy Agency’s (IRENA) Assembly held under the slogan “Energy transitions around the world…Global assessment. The aim of the event is to identify the priorities of the track of transition in the energy sector to pave the way for the Conference of the Parties (COP28) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), scheduled to be held in the UAE by the end of this year.
The ADSW will focus on a wide range of critical topics including Food and Water Security, Energy Access, Industrial Decarbonisation, Health, and Climate Adaptation.
During the opening of the 13th session, the Secretary-General of the United Nations Antonio Guterres stressed that the world is focusing on fossil energy, and we must overcome administrative obstacles and shift traditional energy support towards renewable energy.
On the sidelines of IRENA meeting, the Syrian Minister of Electricity and the Iraqi Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Naim Abd Yasser discussed the possibility of cooperation between the two countries, and integration in several strategic areas such as electrical grid and investment in the field of renewable energy.
