Brazilian President asks the federal forces to restore security in the capital and pledges to hold the saboteurs accountable

Brasilia (ST): Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva condemned today’s the storming into the Congress building, the Supreme Court and the presidential palace by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, and signed a presidential decree allowing the intervention of federal security forces in Brasilia to restore law and order until the end of the month.

Da Silva, who is visiting the city of Araraquara, which was hit by severe floods, said on his Twitter account: “Today, barbarism prevailed in Brasilia. They did it, and as it is known, there are several speeches of the former president encouraging this, and this is his responsibility and the responsibility of the supporting authorities.

Da Silva added: “Democracy guarantees the right to freedom of expression but it also requires people to respect institutions, and there is no precedent in the country’s history for what they did today and therefore they should be punished.”

The Brazilian president pointed out that anyone who participated in the attack and vandalism of public buildings will be found and punished according to the law.

The Brazilian President’s decree declaring a temporary state of emergency comes against the background of Bolsonaro’s supporters storming into the National Congress building, the Planalto presidential palace and the Supreme Court building, where they damaged these buildings which are considered as architectural masterpieces of a modern style and which include many works of art.
