Syria calls on the Security Council, UN to condemn the Israeli crimes and take urgent action to ensure its accountability

  1. On January 2nd, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates affirmed that the Israeli aggression on Damascus International Airport is nothing but a new episode of the crimes of the occupying entity, which has a record full of acts of aggression and violations of the international law and the principles and provisions of the UN Charter.

The ministry renewed the call on the Security Council and the United Nations to condemn these Israeli crimes and take urgent action to ensure accountability for them.

The ministry said in two letters to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and the President of the Security Council : “While the peoples of the countries of the United Nations celebrate Christmas and the New Year and look forward to a year in which crises will hopefuly recede and peace, prosperity and stability will prevail, the Israeli occupation authorities added a new crime to its record which is full of acts of aggression and violations of international law and the principles and provisions of the Charter of the United Nations.

The Ministry added: “ At 02:00 this dawn, Monday 2-1-2023, Israel launched an air aggression with bursts of missiles from the direction of Lake Tiberias, targeting Damascus International Airport and its surroundings, which  led to the martyrdom of two soldiers, the wounding of two others, material losses, and led the airport to go out of service.”

The ministry added: “This Israeli aggression came three days after an attack carried out by (ISIS) terrorists on December 30, 2022 against the workers of the Al-Taym field in Deir Ezzour. 10 innocent workers, who were heading to their work, were martyred in this attack, and this proves the coordination and close relations between the Israelis and the terrorists of “ISIS”.

The ministry pointed out that Israel’s targeting of civil facilities and infrastructure is not the first of its kind, as the Israeli occupation forces have previously targeted the international airports of Damascus and Aleppo, putting them out of service and disrupting civil air navigation, including the movement of United Nations air transport aircraft designated to transport aid and humanitarian work.

The Israeli attacks on December 28, 2021 affected the civil and commercial port of Latakia, which resulted in severe damage to the port, the containers, and the aid of the United Nations organizations operating in Syria.

The ministry said: “Syria condemns Israel’s aggression on Syrian civilian facilities and structures that threatens the lives of innocent people and the safety of international civil transport, which constitutes a flagrant violation of international law, international humanitarian law and international human rights law, and poses a direct threat to regional peace and security.”

The ministry added: “Syria calls on the Security Council and the UN General Secretariat to condemn these Israeli attacks and crimes, and to take urgent action to ensure accountability for them and punish the perpetrators.”

The ministry affirmed that the Israeli occupation authorities would not have continued to commit these crimes had it not been for the impunity provided to them by the US administration and  its allies.
