India Supported Russian Effort for Political Solution to crisis in Syria

MOSCOW,(ST)_ Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, stressed his country ‘s support forthe Russian government efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria and the agreement reached between Russia and the USA in order to get rid of chemical weapons in Syria.

The Russian Itar-Tass site quoted Singh as saying in an interview with Russian reporters on the eve of his visit to Russia, ” I applaud the efforts of President Vladimir Putin and the Russian government in promoting a political solution to the crisis in Syria and fully support the framework in which Russia and the USA have worked in order to eliminate chemical weapons in Syria within a specific timetable . “

The Indian Prime Minister pointed out that his country always stressed that there is no military solution to the crisis in Syria and emphasized constantly that outside military intervention would only lead to aggravation of the crisis, adding, ” We have worked together with Russia on this issue when India was a member of the UN Security Council .”

Singh pointed out that there is an urgent need to reach a political solution to the crisis , stressing that it is necessary to hold an international conference on Syria as soon as possible.

He added that “the crisis in Syria is not just a tragedy for the Syrian people, but it also threatens the stability and security in the region and could have serious economic and security outside the region ‘s broader .”

Singh will hold talks with Putin during his official visit to Moscow on October 20 – 22 and will visit China from October 22 to 24 .
