Enhancing cooperation and activating the agreements signed between Syria and Sudan in the agricultural field, was the main theme of the talks on Monday between Minister of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform Mohamed Hassan Qatna and Minister of Agriculture and Forestry of Sudan, Dr. Abu Bakr Omar Al-Bushra.
Qatna said that the agreements and memorandums of understanding signed between both sides since 2000 in the fields of research, forestry, botanical wealth and plant quarantine systems, should be reviewed, stressing that these agreements contribute to boosting the exchange of agricultural products between the two countries.
For his part, the Sudanese minister affirmed the need to strengthen cooperation between Syria and Sudan, reviewing and developing the signed agreements, hailing the role of the Arab Center for the Studies of Arid Zones and Dry Lands (ACSAD) in preparing for these meetings and enhancing Arab cooperation for achieving food security in all Arab countries.
Later in the day, Minister of Water Resources Tammam Raad discussed with the Sudanese minister the two countries’ experiences in the fields of water and land reclamation projects.
Raad explained the obstacles that hampered the ministry’s work, namely the war on Syria and the coercive economic measures imposed on Syria.
The Sudanese minister, for his part, said that work is underway to carry out several projects in cooperation with ACSAD that will be important for the development of the agricultural sector in Sudan.
Scientific Research
Moreover, the joint cooperation between Syria and Sudan in the field of agricultural scientific research, the possibility of exchanging scholarships, establishing programs and conducting joint agricultural research, was the main topics discussed during the talks between Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research Bassam Ibrahim and minister Al-Bushra.
Ibrahim said that the ministry seeks activating the cooperation agreement signed between the ministries of higher education in both countries through coordination exchanging scholarships in major specializations.
He stressed the need to establish joint scientific and research cooperation programs on livestock and forests that characterize Sudan.
Al-Bushra, for his part, underlined the importance of supporting scientific research. adopting science-based agriculture and benefiting from modern technologies in agriculture and irrigation.
