Ambassador Ala: The Human Rights Council passing non-consensual resolutions against Iran is an unacceptable departure from its principles

Syria confirmed its rejection of the Western countries’ insistence on turning the Human Rights Council and its mechanisms into a tool for defamation and targeting the countries of the South with campaigns motivated by political considerations, stressing that passing non-consensual resolutions and establishing mechanisms against Iran is a further politicization of the Council’s work, and an unacceptable departure from the principles on which the Council was based.

Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva, Ambassador Hossam Eddin Ala, said in a statement today before the 35th special session of the Human Rights Council on the situation of human rights in Iran: Syria calls for abandoning this selective practice based on double standards, which has proven its failure and departure from the role and tasks of the Council in dealing with human rights through constructive dialogue and international cooperation, and considers the call for holding a special session of the Council to discuss the situation in Iran as a continuation of a politicized approach that hides behind human rights slogans in order to interfere in Iran’s internal affairs and fuel riots and terrorism directed from abroad. and disrupt the government’s efforts to handle the situation responsibly and in accordance with its national laws.

Ambassador Ala made it clear that Syria commends Iran’s commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights and its constructive cooperation with the relevant United Nations mechanisms, including the universal periodic review mechanism and treaty mechanisms. Syria at the same time confirms that the non-consensual and the establishment of new mechanisms that are not accepted by the concerned state, is a further politicization of the Council’s work and an unacceptable departure from the principles on which the Council was based.

Ambassador Alla expressed Syria’s condemnation of acts of violence and terrorism that affect civilians and the order-preserving forces in Iran, and commends the authorities for their wisdom and responsibility in dealing with the citizens, and calls on the Human Rights Council to respect the judicial process in Iran and give due consideration to the information provided by the authorities about the circumstances of Mahsa Amini’s death and the riots, and the sabotage that followed and about the legal measures taken in this area. Syria calls the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights and the Special Procedures Mandates Campaign to commit themselves to impartiality and objectivity and not to lose sight of this information.
