Ambassador Sabbagh: The West’s insistence on holding Security Council sessions on “chemical file” in Syria is unacceptable

New York, (ST) – Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh stressed that Western countries’ insistence on holding Security Council sessions  on Syria’s”chemical file” to repeat the same accusations is unacceptable, He added that it would have been more useful to hold sessions on the catastrophic consequences of the coercive measures imposed by these countries against the Syrian people, that disastrously affect their daily life and deprive them of  their basic needs

Sabbagh said during a session of the Security Council yesterday on the “chemical file” in Syria that it is very strange that the Council returns to discuss this issue in less than two weeks in spite of the absence of any developments that require this. “This approach represents a waste of the time and resources of this organization of the UN, ” he added.

Sabbagh stressed that Western countries’ insistence on holding Security Council sessions to repeat the same lies against Syria is irresponsible, unacceptable and incompatible with UN’ duties under the Charter of the United Nations to maintain international peace and security. He pointed out that the false accusations made by these countries have no legal or professional basis against Syria, and  therefore are  completely rejected.

Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations expressed regret for the politicization of the work of the Organization of UN for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, which has reached the point of allowing a fundamental distortion of the provisions of the ban agreement.

Sabbagh pointed out that Syria, since its voluntary accession to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) has implemented its obligations, and it has cooperated  with  full transparency and openness with the Organization for the Prohibition to destroy its stockpile of chemical weapons. “The Syrian National Committee also persisted in submitting its monthly reports on time to the technical secretariat of the organization, on activities related to the destruction of chemical weapons and their production facilities, the latest of which was report No. 107.”, he said

Sabbagh said that Syria’s cooperation with the Technical Secretariat of The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons’ (OPCW) affirms its implementation to its commitments.
