With the participation of a number of events in Al-Hasakah, the Directorate of Environmental Affairs, in cooperation with the Directorate of Agriculture in the governorate, carried out an afforestation campaign at several sites, including parks, playgrounds and squares on the occasion of National Environment Day.
The Director of Environmental Affairs, Engineer Amani Al-Luji, stated that the campaign comes within the framework of confronting climate change, by working to increase green spaces and compensate for the lost ones, especially since many locations were lost during the war years, in addition to spreading the culture of planting trees among the people to contribute to the return of vegetation and maintain a green healthy environment.
For his part, Director of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform, Engineer Ali Khallouf, indicated that drought and war contributed to the loss of a large part of the forest sites, and the removal of a large part of the vegetation cover, noting the need to implement afforestation campaigns to increase vegetation cover and plant forest trees in the plazas, public squares and streets to restore vegetation cover to what it used to be, while promoting the culture of caring for the tree because it gives an aesthetic view, and contributes to a healthy environment for the entire region.
The sites that were planted in Mr. President’s Square in the center of the city of Al-Hasakah included empty spaces within government buildings and a number of bisects in the main streets.
Syria has celebrated the National Environment Day annually on the 1st of November since 2014, with the aim of urging more efforts to protect the environment and its resources, and increasing the level of environmental awareness among members of society.
