Al-Ghabash: The need to support Syria to face the repercussions of coercive economic measures on its health sector

Health Minister Dr. Hassan Al-Ghabash stressed the need to take the necessary measures to reduce the suffering caused by the spread of the Corona epidemic, and the crises and wars that threaten the global health system.
In his speech during the second day of the 69th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, Dr. Ghabash pointed out that the world is suffering from exceptional circumstances more than ever, and needs to strengthen health systems to ensure the achievement of universal health coverage and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Dr. Al-Ghabash pointed to the economic and health effects resulting from the terrorist war against Syria, the economic blockade and the unilateral coercive measures imposed on the Syrian people by some countries, noting that all of this directly affected the capabilities of the health sector to perform its tasks effectively.

Dr. Al-Ghabash pointed to the need for the World Health Organization to support Syria  in order to lift these coercive measures imposed on it so that Syria will be able to face the difficulties and challenges of all the health issues it is facing especially cholera, which has recently re-emerged in Syria, expressing his hope that the outcomes of the meeting will meet the challenges facing the world health system, and in the context of responding to health emergencies in a manner that supports the ability of countries of the world to provide better health services.

The work of the 69th session of the WHO Regional Committee for the Eastern Mediterranean, with the participation of Syria, began yesterday in Cairo under the slogan “Together for a sustainable tomorrow and better health,” and will continue until the 13th of this month.
