Atraditional handicrafts market opened in Tartous

Within the framework of reviving and preservingour ancestors’ traditional handicrafts, a permanent traditional handicrafts market was opened in Baniyas in Tartous province to be a tourist destination of the city and an attraction for many.

The market, which includes 40 shops displaying a variety of products by a number of craftsmen, provides them with an opportunity to market their products directly from the producer to the consumer without an intermediary.

Head of Tartous Craftsmen Union, Ahmed Hasan, said in a statement to SANA that the market is dedicated to the craftsmen of the union, who display many crafts including bamboo, pottery, handmade works, food,, soap and detergent industry, wood engraving, hand weaving looms, shells works in addition to gypsum.

In turn, Head of the traditional handicrafts market Rajab Rajab indicated that the shops are freely invested by craftsmen, in partnership between the Municipal Council of Banias and the Union of Craftsmen in Tartous, which creates job opportunities for the craftsmen and a source of livelihood.

Mohsen Al-Aji, head of the Handicrafts Association and Professions Markets in Tartous and Baniyas, noted the importance of the market, which reflects the deep-rooted historical importance of these crafts in Syria in addition to displayingworks made by people with disabilities.

A number of craftsmen expressed their hope that this market would be a platform to expand their business, selling their works directly, entering the business market widely and improving their income.
