President al-Assad launches the first phase of operating a photovoltaic power project in Adra Industrial City

President Bashar al-Assad launched today the first phase of operating the photovoltaic power project in Adra Industrial City, during his visit to the project.

The project aims to generate 100 megawatts of electricity through solar panels when completed, and extends over an area of more than 165 hectares.

So far, a production of 10 megawatts has been installed, through more than 18 thousand solar panels, and the energy generated from this project has been connected to the network today to cumulatively support electrical production in Syria.

The work on this project was launched as a private investment in cooperation with the public sector, after President al-Assad’s visit to the industrial city of Adra in June 2021.

President al-Assad was accompanied on his visit to the project by Prime Minister Engineer Hussein Arnous, the Ministers of Electricity, Economy, Foreign Trade and Industry, the Governor of Damascus Countryside and the Secretary of the Arab Socialist Baath Party Branch in Damascus Countryside, and a number of officials in charge of the electric energy sector in the Ministry of Electricity, the contributors and experts in the project.

President al-Assad said in a statement to the Syrian and news channels: The private sector can go towards alternative energy plants, whether wind or solar, and partnership with the public sector is necessary in terms of investment and in terms of public interest through electricity generation.
President al-Assad added: The partnership does not necessarily have to be with capital, but the state can be a partner by buying this energy and selling it at the subsidized price to the consumers, and it is possible in some cases to be a lease of transmission and distribution lines.
President al-Assad pointed out that the state is now focusing on conventional energy, but at the same time the state is a partner in alternative energy by owning transmission and distribution lines, and by facilitating the entire process through supporting both the investor and the consumer.
President al-Assad indicated that the state does not seek profit from this sector, but rather seeks to support and push it forward.
