Lebanon’s parliament fails to elect a president
On September 29th, the Lebanese Parliament failed to elect a President for the Republic, after it was not possible for any candidate to obtain two-thirds of the votes of the Members of Parliament (MPs).
The National News Agency stated that 122 MPs out of 128 participated in the first voting session to elect a new president of the republic.
After the votes were counted, none of the candidates got two-thirds of the votes, while 63 MPs voted with a white paper.
Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri adjourned the session to elect the president, after the lack of a quorum in the second session, and said: “When agreement is reached on a president, I will call for a future session of Parliament.”
