The Discovery of a Large Ancient City More Than Two Thousand Years Old in Eastern China

Beijing (ST) – China’s Institute of Cultural Relics and Archeology announced the discovery of a large ancient city more than 2,000 years old in Wuxi, east China’s Jiangsu Province.

Today, the deputy director of the institute, Li Guangri, was quoted by Xinhua News Agency as saying that the ancient city was discovered in a national archaeological park. It was built in the late Spring and Autumn era between 770 and 476 BC and the early Warring States period between 475 and 221 BC. It covers an area of 800,000 square meters.

Li pointed out that the city was crossed by rivers; therefore, waterways were likely the main means of transportation at the time.

He stressed that in addition to many primitive pottery and ceramic products; 99 wells, at a depth of 6 meters were discovered at the city site, which indicates that a large number of residents used to live there, while archaeological excavations are continuing at the site.
