New York-Sana (ST): The countries of the Group of Friends of Defense of the Charter of the United Nations affirmed the continuation of joint work to activate their role on the international arena in order to confront the challenges and threats to which the Charter is exposed.
The ministerial meeting of the group, which was held today on the sidelines of the 77th session of the General Assembly in New York, with the participation of the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Dr. Faisal Miqdad, adopted a joint political declaration that stressed the need to strengthen the role of the group in the United Nations and in other international forums, in order to contribute to facing the challenges and threats it faces. The Charter and attempts to impose Western hegemony on developing countries, especially through the use of terrorism and military force and the imposition of unilateral coercive measures. The participants also renewed their determination to coordinate efforts and strategies at all levels in this framework.
In a speech during the meeting, Minister Miqdad affirmed Syria’s commitment to the purposes and objectives of the United Nations Charter and to work jointly with members of this group to counter attempts to undermine it by Western countries.
It is noteworthy that the group includes about twenty countries from different geographical groups around the world, including Syria, Russia, China, Iran, Algeria, Palestine, Venezuela, Cuba and other countries.
