The number of deaths caused by malaria in the flood-stricken areas of Pakistan has risen to 324, according to the latest official statistics.
Reuters news agency quoted the Pakistani authorities as saying today: “Malaria cases are spreading in the flood-stricken areas and the situation may get out of control if the required aid does not arrive soon.”
Hundreds of thousands of people displaced by the floods are living in the open. Stagnant water at a distance of hundreds of kilometers, which can take two to six months to recede, has led to cases of skin and eye infections, diarrhoea, malaria, typhoid and dengue fever.
