Cholera in Syria has not reached pandemic stage: Medical expert

Professor of Infectious Diseases Department at the Faculty of Medicine of Damascus University Waheed Rajab has stressed that Cholera has not reached the pandemic state in Syria as the total number of infections, confirmed by rapid tests, is 201, while the deaths are 14.

During a symposium held at the Faculty of Medicine, Rajab said that protection from Cholera has to do with health education, clean food, clean drinking water, the increase of fluids and washing vegetables well.

He clarified that the symptoms of Cholera start with severe diarrhea and dehydration, which if not treated will cause kidney failure, circulatory failure and electrolyte imbalance.

The treatment of Cholera is easy and is connected with compensating for the lost bodily fluids and electrolytes by having rehydration solutions and antibiotics, the expert said, pointing out that early detection and proper treatment lead to complete healing.
