Syrian female authors: Voting in local administration elections an opportunity for women to enhance their role in society

A number of Syrian female authors and poetesses have stressed that participating in the local administration elections, which will be held on September 18th, is a national duty and right that aims at choosing the most qualified candidates who can propose constructive ideas that serve society and improve citizens’ conditions.

These elections constitute an opportunity for women to practice their national role and enhance their contribution to public life, the authors and poetesses affirmed.

Abeer Nader, a Syrian author, told SANA that the local administration elections create a chance to make a change for the better at administrative units and to attain development in society through selecting qualified persons with creative skills to lead the development process.

She noted the importance of effective representation of women in the local councils.

Lama Al-Faqih, a Syrian researcher and a poetess, clarified that local administration election is a legal process that completes other election processes, hoping that these elections will help the candidates serve the citizens in the light of the current difficult circumstances.

Wijdan Abu Mahmoud, head of the Sweida branch of the Arab Writers Union, said that elections, in general, consolidate democracy and freedom and they encourage work to achieve development in society and improve the conditions of citizens.

She affirmed the importance of women’s participation in all domains as women play a very influential cultural and social role in society which is of no less importance than the role of men.
