Czech, Chile Welcome Russian-American Agreement on Chemical Weapons in Syria

SANTIAGO, PRAGUE-

The Czech Foreign Ministry has reiterated that solving the crisis in Syria must be attained through peaceful and diplomatic means.

In a statement issued Tuesday night, the ministry welcomed the Russian-US agreement on chemical weapons in Syria, saying that “this agreement must lead to securing the chemical weapons, putting them under international observation and eliminating them.”  

The Ministry pointed out that it backs the issuance of a UNSC resolution in this respect.

In another context, the Czech Initiative for Solidarity with Syria stressed its support for the Syrian state and people in their confrontation of the US threats to launch aggression on the country.

The initiative affirmed that America, France, Israel, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and some other countries have been waging a war against Syria for more than two years and a half through the terrorist groups in the country.

Meanwhile,Chile announced its support for an agreement between the United States and Russia concerning the chemical weapons in Syria.

“Chile hopes the Framework Agreement on the Elimination of Chemical Weapons in Syria will be a first step towards creating the conditions leading to a political solution to the conflict,” the Chilean Foreign Ministry said in a statement released Tuesday.

Chile, a signatory of the Chemical Weapons Convention, “notes the decision of the Syrian government to join the convention,” added the statement.

Also in South America, Uruguay welcomed the U.S.-Russia agreement.

Russia and the United States reached an agreement Saturday in Geneva on chemical weapons in Syria.
