Sudan declares the center of the country a disaster area

On August 21st, the Sudanese authorities declared several areas in the center of the country as disaster areas due to the torrential rains that swept them and resulted in human and material losses.

“The Al-Manaqil locality of the state is a disaster area. The torrents and rains have led to the collapse of more than 3,000 houses,” the Sudanese News Agency quoted Ismail Awadallah, the governor of Gezira state, as saying.

Awadallah called for mitigating the damage and providing tents to shelter the affected.

In turn, the Sudanese army confirmed sending helicopters, rescue boats and a number of its teams to assist the local authorities in Gezira State in search, rescue and evacuation operations for the citizens affected by the floods.

The spokesman for the Civil Defense Council, Abdul Jalil Abdul Rahim, had announced earlier that 79 people had died since last June due to the torrential rains.

It is noteworthy that the Region of Al-Manaqil is the largest Region   in the state of Al-Jazirah and includes about 545 villages and residential neighborhoods.
