Ambassador Sabbagh: Some countries use the veto in the Security Council in a politicized manner

Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, stressed during a meeting of the General Assembly that some countries are exploiting the Assembly’s decision on the reasons for countries’ use of the veto in the Security Council in a politicized manner that does not serve the declared goals of its adoption and is not consistent with the item presented in its framework, which is to strengthen the United Nations system.
Ambassador Sabbagh said: The Security Council must assume its responsibilities within the framework of full compliance with the provisions of the Charter of the United Nations, which the founders of the organization included a clear voting system that ensures a state of balance between international forces and avoids the outbreak of new global confrontations or using the Council as a platform to impose the agendas of some countries.

Sabbagh added that Syria has expressed its full agreement and appreciation with Russia’s stance in rejection of draft resolution that stipulated extending terms of resolution No. 2585 for an extra year without adding any improvements that meet the humanitarian needs of the Syrians.
