WHO calls on Europe to take urgent action to curb the spread of monkeypox

Copenhagen (ST): The World Health Organization called on Europe to take urgent action to curb the outbreak of monkeypox in its countries, with the number of infected people increasing threefold  since two weeks ago .

AFP quoted the Organization’s regional director, Hans Kluge, as calling on European countries to intensify their efforts in the coming weeks and months to avoid the endemicity of monkeypox in a larger geographical area.

“Urgent and coordinated action is required if we are to make a difference in the race against the outbreak,” the Director of the WHO in Europe said in a statement.

According to WHO data, Europe recorded more than 4,500 confirmed cases, three times more than what was recorded in mid-June. This number constitutes ninety percent of the infections that were counted in the world since mid-May, when this disease, which was limited to ten African countries, began spreading in Europe.
