A Syrian dentist and an engineer innovate a smart electric  toothbrush

Syrian dentist Lina Al-Refa’i and the engineer Duha Bazzarah managed to innovate a smart electric toothbrush, which is  capable of detecting cavities.

Dr. Al-Refa’i explained in a statement to SANA correspondent  that this toothbrush serves as a home warning of the necessity of visiting the dentist before any feeling of pain, which saves the patient severe pain in addition to saving  a lot of money .

For her part, Eng.  Bazzarah indicated that the toothbrush contains  a device consisting of an electrical circuit that depends on the difference in electrical resistance between the enamel of the healthy tooth and the injured one, as it applies an electric voltage of 5 volts to the surface of the enamel, and it issues orders stating the presence or absence of caries.

Regarding the mechanism of  the brush, the team said that as soon as it touches the healthy tooth, a green light appears, but if the tooth is infected, the device gives an audible alert, in addition to changing the color of the light to red, which helps the patient to know that he has a dental problem .

At the end of last year, the Ministry of Internal Trade and Consumer Protection granted the project a patent after it was evaluated by the Faculties of Dentistry and Mechanical Engineering at Damascus University as the first in the world.  The project  also won the second prize in both the Excellence Competition and the Bright Inventor Competition.

It is noteworthy that the smart electric toothbrush project was among the pioneering youth projects hosted by the first pioneering investment forum “Opportunity 2022” organized by the National Union of Syrian Students and the Young Entrepreneurs Association “SIA”.

In turn,  the Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Young Entrepreneurs Association, Loua’y Al-Munajjid, stressed  that the association’s goal is to stimulate the pioneering energies of Syrian youth by unleashing their latent creative abilities  and providing them with knowledge and skills to enter the labor market and linking them with financing institutions to complete their projects.
