Ecuadorean parliament rejects impeachment of President Guillermo Lasso

Keto (ST): The Ecuadorean parliament rejected a motion to impeach President Guillermo Laso submitted by the opposition in protest against the situation in the country.

The France Press Agency quoted the Secretary-General of Parliament, Alvaro Salasar, as saying in a virtual session that was transmitted via social media: “The dismissal motion received 80 votes in favour, while it needed to be passed by 92 votes.

The opposition has a majority in the Ecuadorean parliament, but it is divided, with 48 deputies voting against the impeachment motion presented by former Socialist President Rafael Correa’s party.
