Under the title International Humanitarian Law “Means of National Implementation and Legislative Harmonization”, the Syrian National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, in cooperation with the International Committee of the Red Cross, organized today a workshop at the Sheraton Damascus Hotel.

Dr. Bashar Al-Jaafari, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates, Head of the Syrian National Committee for International Humanitarian Law, stressed during the opening of the workshop that Syria is one of the world’s leading countries in raising awareness of international humanitarian law, adding, “We in Syria have moved forward in this field.”

Al-Jaafari indicated that Syria is working to fulfill the international humanitarian law, disseminate it and harmonize it with the national legislation ratified by the Syrian Arab Republic.

Christoph Martin, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation in Syria, said that the International Committee of the Red Cross is a non-governmental and impartial humanitarian organization whose main objective is to provide humanitarian assistance. It also seeks to prevent suffering and promote the principles of international humanitarian law in cooperation with government agencies, ministries and parliaments, stressing that it will continue to work to develop great expertise in the field of international humanitarian law.

For his part, the Secretary-General of the Syrian Arab Red Crescent, Eng. Khaled Arksousi, stressed the importance of applying international humanitarian law and spreading it as much as possible, especially in light of wars and humanitarian crises.
